Coffee as a naturally caffeinated beverage not only works to help people feel more wakeful and alert, but may also increase your heartrate. The heartrate aspect is quite variable, however. For me, a morning cup of coffee may have no obvious effect on my heartrate at all, and I might just feel calm and relaxed. But once in a blue moon, my afternoon workout session might feel off; my heart is beating 180+ beats per minute without much effort! Caffeine’s overall effect on the cardiovascular system is the reason why medical professionals might tell patients with AFib (atrial fibrillation) to avoid coffee. Plot twist—coffee may not only have no negative impact, but is correlated with reduced AFib recurrences. Correlational studies do not prove cause and effect, and could have a number of other factors involved, but for coffee lovers with AFib, they just might not have to drop coffee for good.
