While coffee is consumed for its caffeine most of the time, sometimes there are situations where we want coffee but not the caffeine. That’s what decaf is for, right? Decaf coffee, despite its name, may still contain trace amounts of caffeine, which can be just enough for those sensitive to caffeine. However, there is a rather surprising alternative, and it still somehow tastes a bit like coffee: Chicory. Chicory is a flowering plant, and its roots is the part used for making “chicory coffee” (or tea). The roasting process done to chicory roots, and its unique chemical composition that has coffee tasting compounds equips chicory root with the ability to emulate coffee. But chicory is more than just a weird coffee alternative; it is also used to complement coffee. It’s like coffee blends that combine both Robusta and Arabica beans.
